Crestron DM NAX Firmware 3.2 Gives Integrators More Control
The Brief: Crestron has released firmware 3.2 for the DM-NAX-8ZSA, DM-NAX-4ZSP, and DM-NAX-4ZSA-50 Audio-over-IP devices. The update adds VLAN tagging, Media Player 2.0 API support, access codes for Apple AirPlay software casting zones, native SoundMachine integration with scheduling and multi-zone playback, and increased capacity on the DM-NAX-4ZSP.
The 4ZSP can now support eight audio zones in custom systems, up from four, without additional hardware. And VLAN tagging assigns streaming zones to virtual network segments, while access codes restrict AirPlay connections to authorized users.
Moreover, the Media Player 2.0 API provides custom programmers with access to DM NAX media player functions. And the SoundMachine integration adds time-based audio scheduling across zones.
Firmware 3.2 is available through Crestron Home OS or firmware management tools. It is available now.

Crestron DM NAX Firmware 3.2 Expands Audio-over-IP Capabilities
Analyst Perspective: Firmware 3.2 gives the DM NAX family more room to serve installations with distinct technical requirements. The update is not built around one use case; it adds network controls, programming access, service integration, and added zone capacity across three devices. That distribution is important since integrators can apply different capabilities depending on the project instead of treating every deployment as a single configuration.
The 4ZSP’s added zones are especially relevant to system design because the hardware can take on more coverage through firmware. At the same time, the 8ZSA receives functions that suit managed networks and custom interfaces.
Crestron is also extending the platform’s relationship with third-party media services through SoundMachine. So 3.2 makes the DM NAX family more adaptable across residential, marine, estate, commercial, and hospitality applications while preserving hardware choices within the lineup. This gives dealers another way to use one platform across varied project requirements effectively.
VLAN Tagging Gives Dealers More Control Over Casting Zones
VLAN tagging gives DM NAX systems a way to associate individual audio zones with virtual network segments. The 8ZSA web interface handles tagging at the device, which enables dealers to assign VLAN IDs to ports and choose which traffic receives tags.
Supported traffic includes AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect casting zones, and AES67 streams. This suits installations where network segmentation governs how devices and services communicate. For residential, marine, and estate projects, the feature can limit the casting zones visible to an onboarded guest device.
Instead of exposing every available zone, the system can present only those associated with the network segment. This gives integrators a way to separate audio access across rooms, suites, cabins, or areas sharing one DM NAX deployment.
Media Player 2.0 API Opens a Defined Path for Custom Integrations
Media Player 2.0 API support gives custom programmers a formal interface for accessing DM NAX media player functions on the 8ZSA and 4ZSA-50.
Previously, custom media player experiences relied on CRPC over serial joins without a formal API or documentation. The new interface provides developers with a documented path for creating integrations outside Crestron Home OS. It supports user-specific Favorites tied to an authenticated account instead of a device. This can make personalized media experiences more portable.
Crestron also plans to use the Media Player 2.0 API for a future media player experience within Crestron Home OS. For integrators building bespoke interfaces, the API adds a defined development surface for combining DM NAX playback capabilities with application-specific controls. It supports tailored interfaces for custom deployments.
SoundMachine Adds Scheduled Audio Management Across Zones
Native SoundMachine integration adds support for the streaming service's scheduling capabilities on DM NAX devices. SoundMachine can schedule audio content according to time of day and day of week, allowing different zones to change programming automatically.
This suits environments where audio programming follows recurring operational patterns, including commercial and hospitality installations. Rather than requiring staff to initiate each change manually, scheduled content can determine what plays in each zone at specified times.
The integration also supports multi-zone playback, giving systems greater control over how scheduled audio is distributed. For venues with different programming requirements throughout the day, this connects the media source with an established timetable.
Firmware Adds More Ways to Use the DM NAX Platform
Firmware 3.2 fits the DM NAX lineup by adding capabilities for different installation models without requiring a new hardware generation. The 4ZSP gains more zone capacity through software for custom systems, while the 8ZSA gains network and programming functions suited to sophisticated deployments. The combination gives integrators more ways to manage guest access, custom interfaces, and scheduled content within the DM NAX family.
The consideration is implementation complexity. VLAN configuration depends on network design, while custom API work requires developers familiar with the interfaces. Integrators can address this through programming practices, defined VLAN policies, and testing before deployment. AirPlay access codes can help limit unintended use in shared environments.
Looking ahead, the planned use of Media Player 2.0 API capabilities in Crestron Home OS could connect custom programming with the company's home automation environment, extending the usefulness of this firmware investment.
